Måneskin- Taking the World By Storm

Photos from Google Photos- Not my photos

"Rock and Roll Never Dies!" If you watched Eurovision last year, you would of heard these words come out of the lead singer's mouth. Damiano David, as he hugged his band mates, yelled this out, a premonition that Rock and Roll would have a place again in Eurovision. Damiano David is the lead singer of Måneskin, the Italian rock band taking the world by storm.

So who exactly is Måneskin? A group of 4 friends, ages 21-23, who have been making music since 2015-2016. Damiano David, Ethan Torchio, Victoria De Angelis, and Thomas Raggi. Damiano David has the gritty vocals of a smoker but makes it work with his singing. Ethan Torchio is a young Roger Taylor on drums. He's very quiet when it comes to talking but you can't tell that about him while he's drumming. Victoria de Angelis is usually seen stomping out the beats set by Ethan, while playing her bass and exuding confidence. Thomas Raggi is a very young guitarist who can dance and jump around without missing a beat. They are young but they don't let that stop them.

As of right now, they have 3 studio albums, hopefully with a 4th on the way. For right now, I want to dive in to these 3 albums and tell you what I like about them. These albums speak out to me. If you think about it, the Måneskin members are about my age. So their music speaks to me more than it might if I was a bit younger or older. I consider myself an old soul definitely. I am borderline obsessed with Queen and ABBA. Some of the people my age have no idea who these bands are (which is sad if you ask me). Måneskin has a sound like that of what you may hear in the 1970's. They also dress in 70's like garb.

So the first Album I want to go over is Chosen. Released in 2017, it's their first studio album. Chosen is made up of mostly covers with a few original songs in it. Some of the covers people might recognize is Beggin', originally by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, and Somebody Told Me, originally by The Killers. Beggin' helped Måneskin rise up to fame as TikTokkers all over the world used the song as sounds in their videos. The band also used these two songs in their X-Factor Italy Journey in 2017, most likely before this album was released.

Il ballo della vita is the next album. It was released in 2018. It's full of original music. The name of the album is in Italian and it means, "The Dance of Life." Damiano David has this phrase tattooed on his chest. This album has some of my favorite songs by them on it. L'altra Dimensione, Le parole lontane, torna a casa, and many more. This album has its soft spots for sadness and longing but also has its fun songs, ones that make you just want to dance. It also is the album with a song that Damiano David and the band call a hologram. The song in question is "Are You Ready?". After the interview where he had said that, I remember Twitter freaking out and spamming it on the Timeline. I have to say I didn't like it at first but it grew on me. It's actually on my favorites list that I play while driving.

Okay so the third album is Teatro d'Ira. It means Theater of Wrath. This album is probably one of my favorites. It has I Wanna Be Your Slave, CORALINE, IL NOME DEL PADRE, and the Eurovision winner, ZITTI E BUONI. This is probably the first album I had heard by them. I was introduced to Måneskin by my coworkers. This album has a lot of Italian songs included in it. Some of them are ballad-like but the others are a bit more fast paced. The English songs in this album are a bit more raunchy but I like them a lot. This album has one of the best guitar solos done by Thomas in it. The end of IL NOME DEL PADRE, where he does the solo on the neck of the guitar. Ethan's driving beats is also one of my favorites of this album.

Måneskin has brought me so much joy. I find it cool that I, as one of their fans and listeners, can be an active part of their history as a band. I joined their fan twitter and honestly it was the best decision. I have made so many friends (shoutout to TORCHIOHQ- my besties, I love you!) and have been much more confident in myself. If you never have heard any of Maneskin's songs, Here's a few that I love:

  1. L'altra Dimensione- A fun, Spanish type beat. Makes you want to wear a very flowy skirt and dance and twirl.

  2. ZITTI E BUONI- A classic. Pounding drums, bass line that rocks and gritty vocals.

  3. Beggin' - Definitely a classic. Good for any first time listener.
